Mini Easter Bonnet DIY

Happy early Easter! I am so excited to share with you a perfect little craft project just in time for the weekend- Making your own Easter Bonnet!

I really don't think we wear enough hats these days and my love for vintage and old movies always makes me jealous of those glorious hats!!! So I decided that I would make an Easter bonnet that would be a little easier to wear day to day. This project is great for both adults and kids! How adorable would it be to have little matching bonnets for all the little ones in your life? Super adorable. Lets get to it!

Mini  Easter Bonnet Tutorial

Difficulty: Easy (young children will need help with gluing)

Cost: Cheap!

Supplies:

 I bought:

-Little straw hats (in the doll section of the craft store) the small ones were 67 cents and the larger one was 79 cents. They also came in many different sizes- pick whichever one you like!
- headbands
-fake flowers (These were on sale so I couldn't resist but you could also make your own paper or fabric flowers!)
-little butterflies (could also use little birds, mini Easter eggs, etc.)

Total cost: $7.08

I had:

Ribbons and bits of lace. You can also use beads, scraps of fabric, or anything else you can glue down!

Tools:

I only used some scissors and a hot glue gun! Be careful if you use hot glue...I always seem to burn myself at least once a project. You can use any other glue you like but I love the quickness of hot glue.

Steps:

1. Start with one of your mini hats and start decorating! Think of Austen novels where they are sitting around decorating their bonnets. And with fancy hats there is no such thing as too much!

2. Decide how you want to wear your bonnet.

I liked the idea of putting it on a headband and I think this is an especially good way for kids. I took a cream colored headband and glued some lace on top of it. Then I decided where I wanted my bonnet and glued it down.

You can also had hair combs or clips underneath or I just left one plain and used bobby pins to secure it where I wanted it.

And for a little extra treat:

Too much Star Wars?

This amazing skirt was posted on the Craft blog from this etsy seller.

My friend read a blog post about how you are supposed to watch all of the Star Wars movies in a certain order. I don't know which post started the original discussion because it seems that several people have since written about it. Anywho we decided that instead of just talking about it we were going to DO IT! A full on Star Wars marathon. We started with Episode IV and V then jumped back to II and III (skipping one completely) and then finishing with Episode VI.

It was a really long day but totally worth it. I was a little sad that we didn't watch The Phantom Menace because that movie holds a very special place in my heart. It was my first midnight showing of a movie and I was 12. 12! I also really loved Queen Amidala's wardrobe. I grew up watching the old trilogy but 'A New Hope' has always been my favorite. Best part of the day was that we watched it with a newbie! She knew about Vader being Luke's father but she didn't know about Luke and Leia being related! (Sorry if I just ruined it for you but seriously just watch the movies already!) So it was really cute during episodes IV and V she would keep saying "but doesn't Luke get the girl?" and I would just have to reassure her that everything would work out.

But by the end of the day I was pretty cranky. I had just hit my edge of 'too much' and it was a bit downhill from there. Glad I did it but ready to get out and do stuff! Ha. Also I really want to make some nerdy/awesome Star Wars crafts!

Costume: Emma Frost

Even though it has been awhile since the Oscars I wanted to share a little bit about how my Emma Frost costume came together. I went back and forth for quite awhile on what character to choose for this years Oscar Costume Party. It was seriously the day of that I got the final pieces together. This year was tricky for choosing a great female character. My back up plan was to slap on my hot pink bridesmaid dress and call it good. (I have gotten a lot of use out of that dress! Thanks Sarah!) But finally I settled on Emma Frost from X-Men: First Class. I really loved that movie (Michael Fassbender!!! Drool.) I decided to go with Emma for the fun costume possibilities and not so much the love for the character or 'acting'. Sorry January Jones but your body is rocking but your acting just never really does it for me.  I look nothing like Miss Jones so I was not going to go for the bra and mini look that she rocks for most of the movie.

I found the dress last minute at a thrift store. Pulled on some knee high socks for the 'sixties look' and rocked my sparkly heels. My sister (pictured above as Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) let me borrow this blond curly wig. I brushed out the wig a bit and focused most of my attention on the make up.
I wanted to go for a 'changing into diamond form' look and was completely inspired by this Mermaid Makeup tutorial from Etsy.

In the tutorial she uses spirit gum to attach iridescent sequins to her face to create a bubbly look. I took that idea but used shiny silver sequins from the craft store. I bought the spirit gum at my local party store that carries a bunch of Halloween type makeup all year long. I started with my hairline (before putting on the wig) and layered in towards my face, keeping it thicker towards the outside and thinning it out as it went in. I also applied a lot of sequins to my chest/neck and a few on my arms as well. I felt a bit like a walking disco ball but I think it turned out pretty well. I bought some loose body glitter from Wal-Mart to amp up the sparkle around my eyes and I just applied generously all over. I finished the look with glitter nail polish. The wig ended up covering up quite a bit of the sequins on the face.

I felt pretty sparkly, and a little over-dressed but it was all good friends there so I didn't really care that much. By the end of the night I had taken off the wig and started peeling sequins off. Also I didn't spill anything on the white dress! WIN!!!

Blog Catch Up- Oscar Party

Well March is almost over and I am just now getting around to posting about the Oscars. Oh well! Anyway I wanted to share the few pictures I took during the evening. The one rule for the party was to dress up as a character from a movie in the past year. It did not have to be a character from an Oscar nominated film.

Here we have not one but TWO Megans from Bridesmaids and a Brad Pitt from Moneyball.
This is Mr. Popper sans penguin. The penguin is around there somewhere.
Then we have Hayley Atwell from Captain America and Skeeter from The Help.
Sisters! Emma frost from Xmen: First Class and the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo from...well you get that one.

Last minute guest. No costume but she practiced her Oscar acceptance speech with a mini-oscar cupcake complete with the ugly cry so we let it slide.
The gypsy in the corner is from the new Sherlock Holmes movie.

Overall a fun night. I of course was so wishy washy about my costume until about the DAY of but tomorrow I will share how my Emma Frost costume came together.

Weekend Update-Fab

This weekend was SO GOOD I just had to share it with the internet universe. First off a huge thank you to everyone who helped make Med City Mafia's first big Roller Derby event such a success! It was my first bout and it was SO MUCH FUN!!!

Saturday didn't pull any punches either- I caught some rugby on television and met up with friends to see 'The Hunger Games'!! I loved it. Actually at this point I have now seen it twice. I am going to say that I like the movie better than the book. They used everything I loved and got rid of some of the tiresome bits. I did not purchase any official swag but I did pick up these darling little earrings and dubbed them my Hunger Games earrings...

Then Sunday came and although I had to work it was ANOTHER great day. Friends, food, and the season premiere of MAD MEN!!! We have all been waiting so long. Love. So much love.
My martini shaker and Mad Men cookbook were great companions to the first episode of the season. On top of all of that we finally have Netflix at our house. I may never leave again. Thanks again for the great weekend and now that the craziness of the bout is over I might actually get back to crafting/blogging again!!

Come one come all!

Been a bit swamped lately but here is something I have been working on....

Posters for ROLLER DERBY! Yes I have become one of 'those people' and have been recently consumed with all things derby. Our VERY FIRST BOUT is coming up though and I am just really excited about it. It feels so good to be part of a team again and since it is so new to our town there is an air of anticipation and excitement. So if you are in the Rochester, MN area you should get your tickets!

Cheers!
