Thursday Thrifting

Haven't posted my thrifting finds lately. I have been trying to be good but I have had a couple of really good days!

Here is the haul from a couple of weeks ago. I collect the pie dishes with the recipes in them, my problem at this point is I don't remember which ones I have! So if it is a good price and I don't KNOW I have it I go ahead and get it. This Raspberry Cream Pie plate was only $2.99. My dream is to someday have them all displayed in my house and any extras or doubles I have can then be gifted.

I also bought the old wooden rolling pin for $1.99. The paint is peeling and the handles are a little wonky but I loved the look of it enough to buy it as a decorative piece. I have seen these types of rolling pins go for way more at antique stores, so I thought for the price it will look awesome in my someday kitchen.

The two cake plates are matching and were $3.99 a piece. Steal! I love cake plates and as I may actually set a date and get to plan a wedding here sometime in the hopefully near future these will be put to good use on a dessert table.

The clear pasta container has been on my radar for awhile. I have a pin saved on pinterest where someone used this type of container to store their cupcakes liners. I am notorious at losing track of cupcake liners, shoving them in strange places and generally either squashing them or not knowing what I have. As I find my stashes around my kitchen and elsewhere I have been adding them to the container and now I know where they all are, what I have, and they aren't getting squished anymore! Huzzah!

Harder to see in the picture is a simple wooden napkin holder. I'll admit right now that I don't buy napkins but hoard them from take out. (Most notably chipotle). We end up eating in the basement in front of the tv a lot and the napkins have just been strewn about on the coffee table. Now at least I have them contained. Baby steps towards classing the place up a bit.

So a good haul all around. Yay for good thrifting days!

Vintage Lovelies

This Christmas I got some lovely little vintage items from my mother. My mom, sister, and I are all into thrifting, antique stores, and general collecting. I don't want to say hoarders,,, but,,,, kidding! At least for now. We all have a fairly good idea of each others tastes though so it is fun to get gifts for each other. My sister got a bunch of vintage superhero items and I got mostly vintage beauty and wedding items!

This little lovely came from my mom with a tube of pink lipstick. She tried to find one that was the color 'bashful' or 'blush' (heck yeah Steel Magnolias!) but no luck. Actually most of my lipsticks were too large for her skirt but I found a few plus some chapsticks.

Currently Obsessed With: Agent Carter

I had the good fortune of watching Agent Carter tonight! I don't think I am being too dramatic when I say that this is now my new favorite thing ever. Comic books, awesome heroine, and 40's amazingness? Yes Please! Seriously I just finished watching it on hulu about 20 minutes ago. The premier was last night and after a quick google search I found lots of reviews that were either positive, or saying something to the effect of the feminism was too heavy handed. To refrain from going on a rant/tangent on THAT topic lets focus on the important things here shall we? Like the fabulous vintageness of the ENTIRE show. Hair, makeup, shoes, stockings, cars, buildings, suits, ties, this show is a vintage lovers dream! One of the main reasons Captain America has been my favorite Avenger and Marvel movie so far is that it is set in the 40s. Can't gush enough. I would love to really delve in and talk costuming on this show. Are other vintage lovers thinking the same? I wonder if I will be able to find some like-minded bloggers out there on the case already.

Spring Thrifting

I should be spring cleaning (Christmas stuff is still up outside!) But I have been unmotivated while snow remains on the ground. At least I am getting back to some of my normal routines now that I am learning to balance life's distractions a bit better.

After a less-than-great day at work I had the huge urge to hit the thrift shop up. I have a couple of projects in my head that I want to get off the ground and the thrift shop seemed like a good start. Well I didn't really find the project supplies that I wanted but I did make a good haul!

 

A bright knit hat (much like my favorite purple!), a vintage slip, a French scarf, and 2 bowls for $3.70!

This is still the cheapest thrift shop in town. It takes a bit of digging and the turnover is not the best but it is worth it when you find something!

Love this scarf! I will have to spend a bit of time washing everything. I have plans for the slip- getting really into vintage lingerie at the moment. And it might be FINALLY getting too warm for the hat but I am sure there will be chilly days yet.

Thrifting: Holiday Outfit Edition

Nothing seems to make my heart sing quite like sequins. I think that when I was in school and a die-hard tomboy the years of shunning all things 'girly' has now swung to the other end of the spectrum. Now I am the girl with sparkle everything, way too many dresses, and an obsession with pink. Hmm. Cycles I tell ya.


Combine thrift store finds AND sparkles and you have a most winning combination in my book!

The perfect Christmas green sequin shirt! All the stores are all a glitter this time of year for the holidays coming up and I love snagging a thrifty-vintage find. At $3 this top also be easy on my tight holiday budget! It came complete with shoulder pads but I took those out!

This lovely dress also had elbow pads. Not quite a sparkly beauty but the cute print and small details on this dress make it a great find in my book!

Both of these outfits look slightly frumpy on my tiny dress form. They look even better on someone with the curves to fill them out a bit ; )

Vintage Luggage Set

Do you remember that show Pan Am? Well it didn't do very well but it made a lot of people covet those super cute pan am bags.

Those super cute bags were also super expensive- at least for my shoestring crafty budget. Still it was what I really wanted to get for my friend Krista for her birthday. Thrifting to the the rescue! One day of visiting every thrift store in town uncovered these gems.

Then to personalize them even more I made a 'Pan Am' logo for the red bag. I took a picture of the logo from the internet and took out the name. Then I downloaded the same font and used that to put in her name "Krista". I played around with a couple different ways of getting the new logo on the bag but I ended up just tracing and painting it with some craft paint. To finish it off I tied vintage ladies ties to each bag.

And there  you have it a super cute personalized gift that cost way less than the store bought option. Plus we did some upcycling and made it 'handmade'. Epic win all around.

Thrifting!

The other day I went on a thrifting binge. I hit almost every thrift store in town and walked away with some amazing deals. I was on the hunt for something specific- which can often backfire when you are thrifting but I had quite the success! The items I were on the hunt for are for a birthday present for later this week though so for right now we are going to focus on all the other wonderful goodies I picked up!

 First of all some epic vintage roller skates! At $4 I couldn't pass them up. I used some white ribbon and have hung them from my shelf!

 I found this really pretty Scotland Tea towel and a couple of vintage ladies scarves at the cheapest thrift store in town. Their turn around isn't very good but sometimes you get little lovelies like this. All together the three items were 60 cents! That's how I like my thrift stores. Nice and cheap.

 I also felt like I scored a pretty sweet deal at the goodwill with these fish plates. At 99 cents each my set of four was well worth it. The lady at the counter was all "What are you going to do with these?" And of course without missing a beat I told her: "I am hosting a fishing and camping themed bridal shower next weekend and these are going to be PERFECT." Hahah. Don't judge lady, there is method to my madness. Besides who doesn't just want fish plates!!!

 I was also on a secret hunt for a mini washboard. And I found one! It was a secret hunt because I was sure that I wouldn't find it and would just be disappointed, but lo and behold there one was... hidden in a little bag of clutter. I scooped that right up. I was hoping to make a necklace out of it in time for the concert on Friday but it didn't happen. Next time!!!

I also had to include this little lovely. I actually found it a couple of weeks ago in a thrift store up in the cities. I have been searching for the perfect vintage egg plate for quite some time and I think this may be it. With space for deviled eggs AND other little snacks this relish plate is my new dream come true. It was also only $5. Win!

Happy May everyone! Wow the time seems to be flying by. This week along is going to be busy what with The Avengers being released this Friday, which also happens to be Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you...hahahahahahaha). Then Saturday is Cinco de Mayo and I have a shin dig that evening. Today though I am sharing some new RubyMarilyn Etsy Shop items that I finally got listed!

 New earrings! Hand crocheted with silver chains and just a bit of lace.

 What I am calling my 'Heirloom' necklace. It is an epic 74" long vintage faux pearl necklace that I crocheted onto. Looped it looks all sorts of lovely.

Finally decided to list my Granny Punk necklace. It is the perfect mix of old lady awesomeness and irreverent charm.

A couple more thrifty finds.


My sweet mother bought me this glass set at a garage sale.

 Right after I took this photo I tried to break them all, dropping them as I tried to put them on the shelf. Thank goodness they are all ok!

I found another vintage pie dish at one of my favorite thrift stores. There is not a lot of turnover and most times I don't find anything but once in a awhile there is a real gem and it is dirt cheap.

 I guess this would technically be a 'Cheesecake' dish. I am adding this to my growing collection of baking dishes with recipes on them. At $1.25 I couldn't resist!

Flashback Halloween: Black Cat

Holy crap was I adorable! I still remember this costume fondly. My mom made me a tail out of old black panty hose. She also gussied up a cat mask with some sequins and added fake fingernails to my gloves for 'claws'. From there on it was just as much black layering as was needed for that particular Halloween night.

In other news: I missed a few days on the Countdown to Halloween due to a camping trip that sort of snuck up on me so I had no time to write a few future posts. This week is all about catching up and moving! Yep I am finally moving out of my house. After quitting my full time job that was destroying my soul I had to move back home. Since then I have been telling myself that when I move again it will be for good. Well I have no way of knowing that for sure but I decided quite suddenly this weekend that I was ready to move on. I have definitely been dragging my feet on the topic with the greatest  argument against moving being "but all my stuff is already here" which is no way to live life. So although my life may not be exactly moving forward as much as I would like at least it is moving. Now to balance moving into a new place while still getting ready for my favorite Holiday.....I AM STILL IN NEED OF A COSTUME AND IT IS FREAKING ME OUT.

Halloween Shopping

Not to be confused with 'Halloween Thrifting' this post is about things bought at a plain old store. Of course most of this haul was from the dollar store. There is something strangely satisfying by getting an entire shopping basket full of skulls and severed hands...

I was a little mad that I found 'grow your own body parts' at the dollar store. You may remember from an earlier post that I bought some at the craft store for $2 each! Boo. But this way I stocked up a bit. Also 'grabbed' a couple more severed hands (get it!) some severed fingers, a brain, a heart, 'spooky curtain' and the good old bag of cheap plastic spider rings! Good stuff. Some will be used for decor and other stuff will be used for this weekend's zombie costume. Oh yes, I said ZOMBIE COSTUME. Zombie pub crawl is this weekend and going to be just as epic as last year! (Ok, it could be a little less epic..)

Annnnnnndddddd I spent too much at the fabric store. Got some super cute stamps for a buck each but then I splurged on some vintage-inspired Halloween fabric. Projects to follow : )

Halloween Thrifting!

Only October 3rd and I have fallen off the wagon....missed a post yesterday but I was not idle! I got a few of my outdoor decorations up.

 Got the little skeleton guys up and the windsock and wind chime. Later this week I will be sharing a dollar store outdoor craft.

 

If you look closely you will see an unhappy fat cat sitting in the window. Unhappy kitty apparently does not like Halloween. 

Also I have been trying to be a bit more budget conscious this year so I have been hitting the thrift stores for some Halloween goodness.

This haul is the result of a couple of trips to a certain thrift store. Mondays they have 25% off all of their used merch so I go and stock up! Most of the pumpkin buckets were about 50 cents! Now you can get these in a plethora of colors at Target for a buck but I am enjoying getting different sizes and levels of wear. The little monster figures look like they originally clicked into something and lit up. I just liked them I might try to take off their little caps on the bottoms to see if I can get them to illuminate. 

Not Halloween, but just good thrift stuff. Two more pie plates (good lord I have sooo many of these!) A couple of old books. A silver plated cake platter with server and an old orange tupperware set. My mom has one just like this but green.

Vintage Pink

So I was 'hired' to make a Jackie O style pink outfit and hat. Well as most people say at some point in their lives "if it ain't broke don't fix it!" Yes that's right I found the perfect outfit at Goldrush this weekend. I am just crossing all my fingers and hoping it fits the actress!

 It was only $12! WIN!

This picture shows my crazy side and my making of not one but three different hats. One is a vintage hat that I covered in pink fabric. The other two were made from felt and fabric using a tutorial I found on  youtube. I liked the felt version better but thought it was too small so then I made a slightly larger one. I hope one of them will work. I sent all three hats and the outfit in a big box out to Wisconsin yesterday and now it is just a waiting game to find out how much I have to kick it into panic mode when it doesn't fit.

Vintage DC Sheet dresses

 

Love, love, LOVE! These amazing vintage sheet dresses were made for Comic Con and this would be exactly the kind of thing that I would wear if I ever get to go to the famous convention. Now I just have to keep an eye out for these sheets when I am on my thrifting adventures.

Too much Thrifting?

 

I love thrift store shopping but lately I keep buying things that I perhaps don't need. Probably the one thing I really don't need (seeing as I am living at home) is more dishes but they are the thing I can't seem to stop buying! Some day when I  have my own place again I will be completely set. I probably have enough stuff to fill an entire house and right now it is just living in stacks in my room and basement.

I can never say no to pie plates! In theory I would make cute gifts out of them or something but we all know that I am just going to keep them because no one will love them as much as I do. Same thing goes for other decorative/display dishes. You will be hard up to find a cake plate/ stand that I am not in love with.

 The only thing better than a pie dish? One with a recipe on it. These were bundled all three together for $6 at a local thrift shop. How could I say no?!

 Ok these next dishes I probably didn't need but once again I got into my bad habit of "Someday I will need pasta dishes!" Ah the elusive 'someday'. 'Someday' I will make a huge pot of pasta and use one of these gems to devour it as I have a Godfather marathon. (Preferably my cute 'someday boyfriend' will be sitting next to me- he can use the other dish.)

These last few dishes are a bit beat up but they have some really cool botanical designs on them. The have a few tiny cracks in them so I will probably use them at some point for holding indoor potted plants or something like that.

 

So when is it too much? When your current digs cannot contain the amount of stuff you accumulate any more? Perhaps. Between my dishes addiction and my dress addiction I may have to go into retail therapy.

~still 'trying to figure it all out' (my ongoing and never ending project)
~already looking ahead to October (omg is it August already?!) and the Halloween festivities to come
~my best friend in the whole world is moving back to MN! She will be back one week from today! SO EXCITED.
